I think that a contemporary connection that we can link from Eva Luna to today's society or culture is the idea that there are individuals out there that may look different or be labeled a "freak" but that they are human too. This past year, the tv network FX, released the fourth season of the show, American Horror Story, this time the story line being based around a "freak show" and the different people who make up one and that even though people came to them as a spectacle, that these "freaks" were still part of the family and were still human beings. This relates directly to Eva Luna because in the novel, Eva tells the story of her madrina and the two headed baby that she had and the crime behind how she disposed of the baby's body. When Eva tells the story, she mentions that scientists wanted the baby to do studies and research on it because it was seen as unreal or freak-like. Even though there is not an exact time period on when this novel takes place, we know it is not 2015; therefore, we can connect that back when this story takes place and still in today's society, people who are different or who have extra features may seem freakish or as if they could be bad people even if they aren't. In American Horror Story: Freak Show, it turns out that the bad guys of the season were the "normal" human beings and the "freaks" themselves were the innocent victims.

The link that I have posted is to the Facebook page of the reality show See It To Believe It: Freak Show, which airs on AMC. It is a show about real freaks in today's society and that there are people out there who actually exist. The show is also on Netflix and I highly recommend it!
